WebRTC Expo was a great event, with many great people demonstrating the capabilities of WebRTC. WebRTC is like a jackhammer on steroids, blasting open the current boundaries of the web. For Communication Service Providers (CSPs) this is opening a large new market.
WebRTC doesn’t come with a back end infrastructure, especially not one that can harmonize all the different protocols, codecs, various services and devices available today. CSPs however, are perfectly aligned to leverage their current IMS/PacketCable implementations to compliment the WebRTC services that they or their customers are looking to deploy.
WebRTC and IMS complement each other wonderfully. IMS provides the ability to marry many devices through the IP network through a WebRTC application that requires the highest levels of QoS.
There were several solutions that were demonstrated at WebRTC Expo that CSP can prop up right away to start achieving success with WebRTC:
- Media Conferencing
- Enhanced Contact Centers
All of these technologies are being deployed in some fashion within the large verticals. If they can be used to reduce the price of Healthcare or Education for example, then their value will be proven. And that looks like it is a possibility in the future. However, there is a lot more work still to be done before they will provide their full value and achieve monetary successes.

For example, CSPs will need to develop and prototype their own WebRTC offerings in a set top box or on a mobile handset. They will need to ferret out other commercial technologies being created by the WebRTC realm. They also must collaborate and contribute to the standards bodies and become key players in the WebRTC ecosystem.
By taking these steps, CSPs will extend their brand reach and capitalize on real time communications on the web. By providing the robust environment consumer and enterprise customers have come to expect, CSPs find new revenues.
During the conference, people kept asking me what I was doing there. My answer: looking for value.
