To date, it appears most of the MSPs that have deployed VoLTE have relied on active testing to effectively “spot check” the end-to-end service improvements and overall performance. Very little appears to have been done to look at overall QoE across the entire customer base.

LTE Direct is a device-to-device platform that enables true “continuous” proximity based discovery. LTE Direct is a synchronous system operating in licensed spectrum under the control of the Mobile Service Provider, where devices monitor for service layer announcements (also known as expressions). The synchronous nature of the system allows devices to stay on for an extremely short duration to announce and monitor these announcements. This results in minimal battery drains enabling truly autonomous location discovery.
In one recent test Empirix was involved with, callers were complaining about long connection times and poor voice quality during a storm. The company involved conducted a test of its SBC to better understand the origin of the issue. During the test process, the organization discovered that, while having a registration flood of 10,000 concurrent SIP registrations, SIP call setup time doubled. Moreover, jitter increased on the SBC.

Still leading the way in terms of the number of customers is Verizon Wireless. With 118 million subscribers, it is just a little ahead of its nearest rival AT&T, who have around 107 million subscribers. In terms of where both were one year ago, this represents only a 2% increase for AT&T but over a 7% increase for Verizon Wireless.
